Facebook testing new encrypted backups for Messenger chat app

Meta, previously Facebook, introduced plans on Thursday to check a new safe storage characteristic for backups of customers’ end-to-end encrypted chats on Messenger.

The announcement comes after Facebook turned over Messenger chat histories to Nebraska police as a part of an investigation into an alleged unlawful abortion. A Meta spokesperson stated the characteristic has been within the works for some time and isn’t associated to the Nebraska case.

End-to-end encryption ensures that two events can chat securely by scrambling information in order that messages can solely be learn by the sender and the recipient. The safe storage characteristic will enable customers to again up end-to-end encrypted Messenger conversations in case they need to restore their message historical past on a new gadget.

Facebook won’t have entry to those messages, and customers can create a PIN, generated code or use a third-party cloud service to revive their messages.

The characteristic is rolling out on Android and iOS gadgets this week, but it surely is not but accessible on the Messenger web site. Meta additionally introduced plans to broaden assessments of end-to-end encrypted messages on Instagram.
